چکیده

The distinction between memory for events and memory for facts rests on a range of findings indicating that different memory systems respectively subserve episodic and semantic memory functions. Whereas general knowledge clearly affects memory for events, the respective roles of encoding and retrieval processes in this interaction remain unclear. Using intracranial electroencephalography and multivariate classification techniques to decode memory states, we compared performance and brain activity during the study and free recall of semantically categorized and unrelated word lists. In addition to general biomarkers of encoding and retrieval, we identified specific neural signals, particularly at retrieval, that predicted recall performance and semantic clustering for categorized lists. In contrast, we observed biomarkers of temporal (i.e., episodic) organization of recall for unrelated lists only at encoding. These findings suggest that semantic memory processes flexibly interact with episodic retrieval to guide memory search.

The Pivotal Role of Semantic Memory in Remembering the Past and Imagining the Future

Episodic memory refers to a complex and multifaceted process which enables the retrieval of richly detailed evocative memories from the past. In contrast, semantic memory is conceptualized as the retrieval of general conceptual knowledge divested of a specific spatiotemporal context. The neural substrates of the episodic and semantic memory systems have been dissociated in healthy individuals d...

Age-Related Changes in the Functional Network Underlying Specific and General Autobiographical Memory Retrieval: A Pivotal Role for the Anterior Cingulate Cortex

Age-related changes in autobiographical memory (AM) recall are characterized by a decline in episodic details, while semantic aspects are spared. This deleterious effect is supposed to be mediated by an inefficient recruitment of executive processes during AM retrieval. To date, contrasting evidence has been reported on the neural underpinning of this decline, and none of the previous studies h...

Neural Dynamics Associated with Semantic and Episodic Memory for Faces: Evidence from Multiple Frequency Bands

Prior semantic knowledge facilitates episodic recognition memory for faces. To examine the neural manifestation of the interplay between semantic and episodic memory, we investigated neuroelectric dynamics during the creation (study) and the retrieval (test) of episodic memories for famous and nonfamous faces. Episodic memory effects were evident in several EEG frequency bands: theta (4-8 Hz), ...

HOW THE PAST BECOMES PRESENT Neural mechanisms governing retrieval from episodic memory

Remembering previously experienced events can happen as a result of an effortful retrieval attempt. At other occasions, a memory can enter our minds without any apparent effort – or, indeed, intention to retrieve. Although it has long been appreciated that retrieval from episodic memory is intertwined with cognitive control, the neural mechanisms of memory-control interactions remain unclear. I...

Frontal brain activity during episodic and semantic retrieval: insights from event-related potentials.

Previous neuropsychological and neuroimaging results have implicated the prefrontal cortex in memory retrieval, although its precise role is unclear. In the present study, we examined patterns of brain electrical activity during retrieval of episodic and semantic memories. In the episodic retrieval task, participants retrieved autobiographical memories in response to event cues. In the semantic...
